Files and images
You can give Aderra a document to read or an image to look at. There’s no attach button in the message box. Add files in one of two ways:
- Drag a file from your computer onto the chat. An Upload files panel appears: drop the file there.
- Paste a file or a copied image into the message box with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac).
The file appears above the message box. Add your question and send it as usual.
Images
Section titled “Images”Drop an image and Aderra sends it to the model as a picture it can see. Ask about it, have it read the text in a screenshot, or describe a chart. You can also ask Aderra to edit an image you added, or turn it into a video. See Images and video for what that costs and which plans include it.
- JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF work.
- Before upload, your browser shrinks each still image so that neither side is larger than 1536 pixels. This keeps photos from a phone small enough to send, and the result is still plenty for the model.
- If you paste an image, Aderra may ask Select Upload Type. Choose Upload to Provider, which sends it as an image. Never choose Upload as Text for a picture: it accepts any file and reads its raw bytes, so the model gets garbage and you still pay for it.
Documents
Section titled “Documents”Aderra reads a document’s text into the conversation, and the model then works with that text. These are read:
- Word (.docx)
- Excel (.xlsx and .xls)
- OpenDocument text and spreadsheets (.odt, .ods)
- Plain-text formats: .txt, Markdown, CSV, JSON, HTML, XML and source code
For a PDF, Aderra asks Select Upload Type first. Choose Upload as Text. Other documents go straight in.
Good to know:
- Aderra reads the whole document into the chat. It doesn’t search it or look things up in it. Everything it read counts towards the conversation’s context window. On Free, a document of more than about 24,000 words doesn’t fit, and the message is refused.
- Very long documents are cut off. Only about the first 100,000 tokens of each file are read (roughly 75,000 words of English).
- Scanned PDFs can’t be read. A PDF made only of pictures of pages has no text to extract, so the upload fails. Take screenshots of the pages and add them as images instead.
- Old .doc files and PowerPoint files aren’t supported. They upload, but Aderra reads their raw bytes, not their text. Save them as .docx or PDF first.
- Add images and documents in separate drops. A drop that mixes them is read entirely as text, including the images.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”- Up to 10 files per message.
- Documents and text files up to 15 MB each.
- Anything over 50 MB is refused.
If a message is too big for the model as a whole, usually because of several images or a very large document, you’ll see “This conversation has grown too large to send to the model.” Start a new chat, or add a smaller file. See Error messages.
Adding files and images to a chat works on every plan. What differs is how much fits: your plan’s context window sets how long a document the model can take in (the Plan page lists each window), and on Free every message you send, with or without files, counts towards the 10 free messages.
Editing an image you added is image generation, which needs a paid plan or a credit pack. Turning it into a video needs Pro or Max.
What is kept
Section titled “What is kept”Files you add are kept with your account, so they still show in the chat when you come back to it.
- See and delete your files in Settings → Data & Privacy → Manage files: click Manage to open My Files. Images Aderra generated for you are listed there too.
- Deleting a chat doesn’t delete the files you uploaded to it. It does delete the images generated in that chat. Delete uploads from My Files.
- In a temporary chat, files you add are deleted automatically after 7 days, along with the chat’s messages. Turn on Temporary Chat before you add files: files added before you switch it on are kept like normal uploads.
